Schools will re-open on schedule, AH1N1 on the decline

Schools islandwide will re-open after the year-end holidays tomorrow. Schools where G.C.E. (Ordinary level) papers are being marked will re-open on January 11.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has not been informed by the Health Ministry of any closure of schools or delay in re-opening, due to the spread of the AH1N1 virus
Minister of Education Susil Premajayanth told LAKBIMAnEWS, “We have not been given any kind of warning about the AH1N1 virus from the Ministry of Health, therefore schools will re-open on schedule.” “It’s not our responsibility to look into health aspects. Had health officials informed us about a potential threat we would have to postpone the date of reopening”
“However, the Ministry of Education says it has taken steps to create awareness among students, teachers and parents in order to curb the spread of the virus. In areas where the virus is likely to spread we have got Public Health inspectors inspecting schools weekly. If any persons are suspected to carry the virus they will be separated from the rest and will be given treatment,” Minister Premajayanth said.
However, when contacted Dr. Paba Palihawadane Head of the Epidemiology Unit, Ministry of Health, said that the number of swine flu cases were on the decline. “We experienced a peak in November and now it there is a downward trend. AH1N1 is moving out of the country.”
She added, “the AH1N1 vaccine donated by the WHO will be introduced to the country this month.” The WHO is expected to dispatch 385, 000 doses in the first phase and these would be distributed among workers and pregnant mothers.
