Rights activists want Moragoda before the law

Civil rights activists are disappointed over the recent blitz of hyperbole over transparency, legalizing the right to information and media freedom coming from Minister Milinda Moragoda, who himself has been accused of cheating the public and the state. He was clearly named in the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) report which looked into fraud and corruption of public funds.
Minister Moragoda was involved in the privatization of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, the on-line lottery scam, and a few other shady enterprises which brought significant losses to the country.
According to the first COPE report presented by Wijedasa Rajapakshe, the On-line National Lottery Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the National Lotteries Board has gone bankrupt. At the same time the COPE committee has found that there was a misappropriation of funds in the privatization of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation at the time Milinda Moragoda was the Minister in-charge.
Meanwhile, a well-known civil rights activist who wished to remain anonymous told LAKBIMAnEWS “this is a matter for concern that has to be probed by all those interested in good governance. The findings of the COPE report have been taken to courts but the culprits are still not charged and they go about preaching as if they are paragons of virtue after all they have done, depriving the state of millions of rupees.”
Ironically Moragoda now along with the party that he is leading, the Sri Lanka National Congress, is preaching of the importance of the right to information and is persuading authorities to legalize the freedom of information act, in order to ensure good governance, minimize corruption and ensure transparency.
