New-look Sri Lanka meet Bangladesh
A youthful Sri Lanka national cricket team will meet Bangladesh in the opening fixture of the tri-series also involving India on Monday.
Sri Lanka without a number of key players as national selectors took a number of radical changes following team’s poor performance in India will bank on their young guns to fire.
The misfiring, Sanath Jayasuriya and Chamara Kapugedera, fast bowler Lasith Malinga and mystery spinner, Ajantha Mendis have all been axed while Muttiah Muralitharan and Mahela Jayawardene were rested. Chamara Silva makes a return to the Sri Lankan side, having played his last ODI back in August of 2008. The young Lahiru Thirimanne, known to be a good finisher at the domestic level, leg spinner Malinga Bandara, fast bowler Thilan Thushara are the new inclusions to the Sri Lankan line-up.
Tillakarante Dilshan is in awesome form and he would definitely look to carry his purple patch into the New Year. His opening partner Upul Tharanga and Captain Kumar Sangakkara had a very good series with the bat against the Indians and is sure to carry on as Sri Lanka look for the morale boosting win. The Achilles heel for the Lankan team however, is their inexperienced middle order. The absence Mahela Jayewardene, who injured himself in India, has given an out of form Thilan Samaraweera another chance to shine in the shorter format of the game. But the loss of the stylish Jayawardene, who seemed to be hitting good form at the fag end of the India ODI series and the impressive all-rounder Angelo Mathews, again due to an injury, will be crucial for Sangakkara’s men.
