Kandy SC signs up top three school players
Sri Lanka club rugby’s all-conquering outfit Kandy SC have roped in three talented schoolboy rugby players from the hill-capital who shone in the 2009 inter-school rugby season, with a view to further strengthening their squad for 2010, Chairman of the Kandy SC Rugby Committee Lasantha Wijesuriya told LAKBIMAnEWS.
He said that outstanding Sri Lanka Youth cap and last year’s Dharmaraja skipper and centre Dharshana Ettipola and the St. Anthony’s Katugastota duo of centre Amila Weligampola and number eight Arshad Mohamad have already been signed for the forthcoming season.
Pressed on what measures Kandy SC would take in the event of any probable player cross-over during the course of the upcoming season, the KSC Rugby Committee Chairman observed that all seniors had expressed their solidarity with the club to play for the entire season but for a couple of players.
“There are a couple of players with whom we are discussing at the moment,” he said.
“These guys are yet uncertain on whether to remain, at Nittawela or not, but we are confident of convincing them to remain here not only for their own betterment both as players and individuals but also from the perspective of the club.
“But, I can assure and guarantee that none of the former captains or any senior player will leave KSC this-year.”
Radhika & Sanjeewa
pledge allegiance
Wijesuriya unequivocally squashed rumours circulating in rugby circles that ex-captain and veteran full back Radhika Hettiarachchi was likely to sever links with the Nittawela based club in favour of a high-riding forces team.
He also insisted that another former captain and veteran right-wing Sanjeewa Jayasinghe would represent the club amidst feverish speculation that the former national skipper was mulling hanging up his boots last year.
Kandy SC who are to be led by Sri Lanka cap and gifted first five eighths Fazil Marija this year will be determined to retain the Caltex League title for an unprecedented 10th successive season along with the Caltex Clifford Cup knock-out for the fourth consecutive year.
