Army boxing champs

Sri Lanka Army boxers performed exceptionally well during 2009 winning all major championships conducted by the Armature Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, namely Clifford Cup, National and Defence Services. Army was also awarded the Muththaiyah Zavior Shield, awarded to the most successful boxing club.
The Army boxers secured major honours in the Layton Cup boxing meet held in July 2009 winning the highest number of gold medals in the men’s category by pocketing five weight categories (five Gold) and four Silver medals. Army woman boxers won three Gold medals. Corporal Niluka Karunarathne became the Best Female Boxer in the Layton Cup meet.
Army won the Clifford Cup held in August 2009 by winning six Gold medals and six Silver medals in the men’s event and two Gold medals in women’s category.
Army also won the National Championship for men held in October 2009 convincingly with a points difference of 13, Army securing 43 to 30 with Slimline being runners up. Army won five Gold medals. Army woman boxers secured two Gold medals in Nationals.
