In an unprecedented move, the police department is expected to arrest 1000 political supporters who were involved in election violence. This will be the biggest ever police mission to arrest people suspected of election violence.
Police headquarters reveal that the suspects are from both the government and opposition. Among them are underworld gangsters and army deserters.
“We are not bothered about their political background. Those who are responsible will be brought to book”, a senior police officer said.
“We have been monitoring violence during the presidential election and have identified the culprits behind these acts,” sources said.
According to senior DIG Gamini Navaratne , head of the police elections secretariat, 1080 complaints were received from nominations date till January 29 -- 958 of them were in the pre election period. Fifty-one other complaints were on incidents that took place on election day while the rest are on post-election violence. |
