Sports Minister can call AGM any time
– Rugby secretary
Secretary of the Interim Committee of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Kiran Atapattu says that if Provincial Unions fail to ratify the newly drafted constitution before February 9 they will promptly bring it to the notice of Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge.
He said that if the Provincial Unions dilly-dally on its ratification it would be up to the Minister to take a final decision and call an election of office bearers or an Annual General Meeting (AGM) to the game’s local controlling body.
Atapattu noted that the Interim Committee of the SLRFU had convened all Provincial Unions for a Special General Meeting (SGM) on last Friday (Jan 29) to ratify the amendments to the new constitution but officials from only three Provinces (Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Western) had turned up the day being a public and mercantile holiday.
However, he stressed that as there was not the stipulated quorum to conduct the SGM it had been put off till the second week of February, and emphasised that if the same situation were to arise again the SLRFU IC would inform the Minister of Sports to take a final decision on it.
He stated that the Minister has the power to call an AGM at whatever date he wants and once a legally approved document is finalized by the Attorney General it needs to be ratified by the concerned sports association with room for clarifications at an SGM.
