Asia Cup cricket in Sri Lanka?
Contrary to media reports that Sri Lanka will hold the Asia Cup ODI tournament from June 16-25 this year, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials say that no official announcement has been made thus far by the Asian Cricket Council, even though Sri Lanka is likely to get the nod.
According to reports ACC’s Chief Executive Officer Syed Ashraful Huq has told The Hindu that Sri Lanka will host the tournament and the Premadasa Stadium is the likely venue for the tournament.
But SLC refuted claims and said in case of Sri Lanka hosting matches, the likely venues would be SSC, Tamil Union and Dambulla with the final expected to be played at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
“In fact we saw it but so far nothing has been informed to us in this regard. Yet we are hopeful of hosting the tournament in Sri Lanka,” said a SLC official. Sri Lanka are the defending champions of the tournament.
Syed Ashraful Huq has told The Hindu on Thursday that only the four Test playing nations of Asia - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh - would take part in the event due to time constraints.
“In the last edition of the Asia Cup, we had Hong Kong and UAE in the tournament but we had to shorten the format this time because of the lack of time available for the major teams,” he was quoted saying.
The ACC has reportedly been forced to consider Sri Lanka as a possible venue as the broadcasters and sponsors rejected first choice Malaysia due to weather concerns. |
