The United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have drafted their election petitions and will file them in courts this week. The petitions will be handed over on Monday or Tuesday before the 21- day deadline given to hand over such objections.
UNP MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe told LAKBIMAnEWS that all the evidence has been gathered and the petition has been compiled by party lawyers. “The compilation will be complete by today and we plan to present the plaint in courts on Monday or Tuesday. I will meet the general today or tomorrow to get his signature for the petition,” Rajapakshe said adding “The Supreme Court allowed us to get his signature.”
Meanwhile, JVP MP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath also stated that a team of lawyers put the finishing touches to their election petition yesterday. He added that they have detailed hundreds of incidents of election law violations that can be backed by evidence.
“We will present our petition by Monday and we hope that the court will look into the matter and nullifies presidential election,” Herath said.
“The Elections Department refused to hand over carbon copies of results from the 880 counting centres to an election monitoring body”, he noted. |
