Largest community water project in S. Asia opened

The Sooriyawewa integrated community water supply and sanitation project constructed at Viharagala, Sooriyawewa was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday. This project is considered as the largest community water project in South Asia.
The Rs.90 million project, which was constructed by the Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry, will benefit 15,700 people of 3000 families in Venivelaara, Mahapelessa, Viharagala, Bendigantota, Alioluaara and Beddeveva West in Sooriyawewa.
Addressing the gathering at the occasion, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the government took over the responsibility of facing the challenge in achieving development goals by placing confidence in the people’s strengths. Thus, in a very short period the government was able to fulfil the people’s development expectations, he said.
Noting that the country was at a standstill due to terrorism, the president stated that with the end of terrorism the government was able to expand development projects to rural areas.
