SSEA starts Bio-gas Project at Jathika Pola
The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SSEA) commenced a pilot Bio-gas Project at Jathika Pola - Narahenpita, on Thursday to remedy the garbage problem.
The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) continues to receive complaints regarding garbage collection. The mediation of SSEA to reduce this problem by initiating a Bio-gas production project at the place where organic matter is mostly concentrated should be highly appreciated, said CMC Commissioner Badrani Jayawardane.
She appealed to the business community to render their maximum support to the SSEA to highlight this project as a model to the other commercial cities. She said the pilot project will help CMC to reduce the city waste management problem and clear the way to proceed with the goal of a “Garbage Free” city by 2012 as directed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The daily accumulation of market waste in the Jathika Pola is about one ton. The project will generate approximately 72 kwh of electricity per day earning a monthly revenue of over Rs.144, 000 by way of generating electricity and organic fertilizer. |
