Journey to Bambarakanda Falls

Bambarakanda waterfall is the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The area around Bambarakanda is rich with scenic beauty, rugged terrain, waterfalls, tea fields and cool climate making it an attractive destination for nature lovers.
Bambarakanda Falls (also known as Bambarakele Falls), with a height of 263 m (863 ft), ranks as the 299th highest waterfall in the world. Situated in Kalupahana in the Badulla District, this waterfall is directly visible from the A4 Highway. The waterfall was formed by Kuda Oya, which is a branch of the Walawe River. The Bambarakanda Falls can be found in a beautiful forest of pine trees.
The water fall down from a high rock and by knocking on other rocks, increase the beauty of this fall.

Reaching Bambarakanda...

Reaching Bambarakanda is not easy compared to other waterfalls in Sri Lanka because Bambarakanda is not very close to the main road. If you want to travel, there are two ways. One way is through Kalupahana, which is situated on the Balangoda-Haputale road, and then turn on the Udaweria side from Kalupahana junction and come 5 kilometers. Then you can reach the Bambarakanda waterfall. Another way is through Horton plains or Ohiya. It is 15 km from Ohiya to Bambarakanda Falls.
To travel to Bambarakanda falls from Ohiya is not easy. Reaching Bambarakanda is no easy task. But one is mesmerised with the sheer beauty of the falls. There is another water fall close by, which is as beautiful as Bambarakanda.

The tea estate

On your way to Bambarakanda from Ohiya, you can visit a tea estate known as Udaweria Estate. It is a place you must visit because you can see magnificent sceneries.

When to experience the beauty

The best months to visit Bambarakanda are from March through May. During this period the chance of rain is very low but water is plentiful in streams and waterfalls. From June to September it will be very dry and windy. From November through February chances of rain are very high.
