With a week to go before the UNHRC (United Nations Human Rights Commission) sessions in Geneva, and an expected resolution against Sri Lanka  approaching, spearheaded by the US, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice has now expressed her concern over the appointment of Sri Lanka’s Deputy Permanent Representative and former commander of the 58 Division, Shavendra Silva, as a UN Senior Advisor on Peacekeeping Operations.

Even as the Central Bank took urgent measures to avert a major balance-of-payments crisis, leading economists warned last week that the government must stop carrying out ‘prestige projects’ that do not bring returns.
One of the ventures they named was the Hambantota Port, but they also mentioned the Katunayake-Colombo luxury train project (suspended) and the Mattala airport (which has one of the longest runways in the world). Although it was not an infrastructure project, they also named the “extremely wasteful” bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

A known underworld drug lord was abducted at gun point by armed men who arrived in a white van whilst being escorted from his court hearing back to Welikada prison. The victim is a leading drug trafficker in the country, who had deployed hundreds of men to smuggle and distribute boatloads of heroin smuggled from India, according to the Police Narcotic Bureau.

Tour operators who had made reservations for inbound tourists prior to the hike in fuel and power rates will not be able to adjust their costs, and instead will have to bear the operational costs in the coming months, said sources from the tourism sector.
“Local operators will have to work without expected profits as these tours are planned some months in advance,” said the President, Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators, Nilmin Nanayakkara.
Meanwhile, the President, Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka, Anura Lokuhetty, commenting on the sudden price hikes said, “Sri Lanka is not the only ‘girl on the beach’ and fuel/power price hikes will make Sri Lanka ‘a high priced destination’ leaving room for tourists to look elsewhere.”

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake charged that the government has spent Rs.700 million on temporary toilets installed at the recently concluded Deyata Kirula exhibition.
“I have received this information from the company which installed the temporary toilets at the Dayata Kirula exhibition so I am saying this with authority,” he said.
