CWE to buy farmers excess vegetable stocks

L-News---CWE-PhotoThe Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) has started purchasing the excess stocks of vegetable from the farmers to avoid wastage. The CWE will directly purchase the excess stocks of produce from the farmers to avoid wastage at the Dambulla Economic Center where the vegetables are purchased by traders for distribution throughout the island and to stabilize reasonable prices.

The programme, which has been launched under the instructions of the President and the guidance of Consumer Affairs Minister Johnston Fernando, is being carried out until the farmers fetch a reasonable price.

Acting General Manager of Lanka Sathosa S.A.C.N. Jayatillake said that this will provide an opportunity to provide vegetable to consumers at reasonable prices at Lanka Sathosa outlets.

The Dambulla economic Center is receiving large stocks of vegetables recently and as a result the vegetable prices have significantly come down making the farmers feel the pinch of falling prices.

The Chairman of the Dambulla Urban Council Jaliya Opatha has held discussions with Minister Fernando about launching a new mechanism to provide them a fair price by purchasing the vegetables directly from the farmers. The farmers have expressed appreciation for the government's program to purchase their produce at reasonable prices averting wastage.
