Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has accepted the registration of the Democratic Party set up by Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka under the symbol of the flaming torch, sources said on Monday.
Matters pertaining to the delay in registering Fonseka’s Democratic Party as a political party were brought to the attention of the Elections Commissioner Deshapriya during the talks.
Officials at the Elections Secretariat had inquired regarding the number of current party members and activities carried out so far, Fonseka’s media unit said.
The former Army Commander on previous occasions had also discussed with the Elections Commissioner and the Human Rights Commission regarding the delay in registering the Democratic Party as a political party.
The party was accepted as a legitimate political party by the Elections Commissioner following a recommendation by the Human Rights Commission.
