The milk food distributors have asked the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) to revoke the import tax on milk powder or to grant permission
for a price increase. The government levies a Rs. 107 per kilo import tax on milk powder. The importers say the prices of milk powder have drastically gone up in the world market.
Sri Lanka imports milk powder mostly from Australia and New Zealand. The milk food companies have sought an increase of around Rs. 40 per a 400 grams packet of milk powder. Currently, the maximum retail price of a 400 grams packet of milk powder is Rs. 325. The maximum price for a packet of one kilo is Rs. 810.
