What happened to Kuruppu?
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Interim Committee (IC) recently decided to end the services of Brendon Kuruppu as manager of the national team, with IC Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga saying Kuruppu’s contract was over. But IC’s Chairman DS de Silva last week told a section of the media that Kuruppu was removed as he had differences with players. The SLC IC offered Kuruppu a position in the selection panel, which he is yet to accept.
As LAKBIMAnEWS learns Kuruppu was never given an annual contract by the IC. Some players who spoke to us said Kuruppu was very direct with the players but had a fine rapport with them. So arguments put forward by Ranatunga and de Silva won’t hold water.
This paper also learns that the International Cricket Council has sent a letter to the SLC IC appreciating Kuruppu’s service as manager of the team. And the IC is reluctant to issue it to the media.
Kuruppu held the position over a year and came in for praise for the way he conducted himself during last year’s Lahore terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team. |
