Sri Lanka can be number one

Sri Lanka Cricket says that a 2-nil victory in the series will give its team a chance of replacing India as the World no 1 ranked Test team, a position that has been long elusive. Sri Lanka who was number two ranked team was demoted to fourth slot following a 2-0 series defeat in India and if achieved it would be the biggest achievement in cricket after World Cup win in 1996.
The Indian team’s current rating point of 124 will be brought down to 120 and Sri Lanka’s rating will go up to 121. The ongoing series between Australia and Pakistan will have no bearing on this as even a 2-0 whitewash from Australia (which is very unlikely) will not give them added rating points as Pakistan is ranked 6th at the time.
